Your complete ASVAB preparation platform with practice tests, interactive quizzes, and expert resources to help you join the U.S. Military
The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is a multiple-choice test used by all branches of the U.S. Military to determine your eligibility for enlistment and which jobs you qualify for. Every year, over one million people take the ASVAB. It's the single most important step between you and your military career.
The test measures your abilities across 9 different areas, from math and reading to science and mechanical reasoning. Your overall score, called the AFQT (Armed Forces Qualification Test), is a percentile from 1 to 99 that determines whether you can enlist. Your individual subtest scores create line scores that determine which Military Occupational Specialties (MOS) you're eligible for.
The higher you score, the more career options you unlock. A score of 50 puts you ahead of half of all test-takers and qualifies you for most roles. Scoring 70+ opens the door to highly competitive technical and intelligence positions. The bottom line: preparation directly impacts your military career options.

Each military branch sets its own minimum AFQT score for enlistment. Here are the current requirements for high school diploma holders.
These are baseline minimums and can change with recruiting needs. GED holders typically need higher scores (50+). Competitive jobs often require AFQT scores well above the minimum. Learn more about ASVAB scoring.
The ASVAB has 9 individually timed subtests. Four of them (AR, MK, WK, PC) make up your AFQT score. The rest contribute to line scores that determine your job options.

Your AFQT score is a percentile from 1 to 99. A score of 50 means you scored higher than 50% of test-takers. The minimum to enlist varies by branch (31 for Army, 36 for Air Force), but scoring 50+ qualifies you for most jobs, and 70+ opens competitive technical roles. The higher you score, the more career options you have.
The computerized version (CAT-ASVAB) takes about 1.5 hours and has 145 questions across 9 subtests. The paper-and-pencil version takes about 3 hours with 225 questions. Most enlistees take the CAT-ASVAB at a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS).
Most people see meaningful improvement with 2 to 4 weeks of focused study, spending 30 to 45 minutes per day. Start with a diagnostic test to identify your weak areas, then prioritize those subtests. If math or reading is a significant weakness, plan for 6 to 8 weeks of preparation.
Yes. You can retake after 1 month, then 1 more month for the second retake, then every 6 months after that. There is no lifetime limit. Your most recent score is the one that counts, not your highest, so only retake if you're confident you'll improve.

Focus on the four AFQT subtests first: Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge, and Paragraph Comprehension. These determine your enlistment eligibility. Once your AFQT score is solid, work on the subtests that feed into the line scores for the jobs you want.
